Tank Aces lists

Postby DylanGould » Fri Jun 21, 2013 1:34 pm

Played a few games of Tank Aces the other night, to test a couple hunches in preparation for a Tank Aces event in July. Talk migrated to lists, which of course led to an overdose of EasyArmy. Here's what we came up with; I separated the posts out by faction. The basic setup is late-war 500-point Tank Aces.

British 500pts

11th Armored Squadron: 2x Sherman, 2x Firefly, confident/veteran. Basic list, clocks in at 425 points...starts to get more efficient in later rounds, where the leftover points can get used. This is also a Market Garden list, so they gain the APDS...woo-hoo for AT 15!

Armored Recce Squadron: 5x Cromwell, 1x Challenger, confident/trained. Challenger is a beast with it's ROF 3, but being the only 17pdr, it is susceptible to getting picked off. I wouldn't go with this list unless you really like a tank with a sweet hull and butt-ugly turret. You can upgrade to Guards to lose two Cromwells but gain Veteran status.

Armoured Squadron: 5x Sherman, 2x Firefly, confident/trained. I like this list for the extra meat-shields you get for the Fireflies, and it comes in at 495 points. Normandy era, though, so no APDS ammo, but AT 13 is enough unless you are going up against a set of superheavies.

American 500pts

Light Tank Company (14th Cav): 12x Stuart, confident/trained. The main gun is only AT 7, so you are not doing anything from the front of tanks, but they are Light Tanks, so the 16" move combined with the numbers means you should be able to get some side shots if you plan your moves a turn in advance.

Light Tank Company (2nd Cav): 6x Chaffee, confident/veteran. Same armor as the Stuarts (which is effectively nothing), but also the same speed...and a Sherman gun.

Medium Tank Platoon (76mm) (2nd AD): 4x Sherman(76), confident/veteran. Your standard fare in late war; they are Normandy-equipped, so the main gun is still AT 12, but you get the Spearhead move to help balance out the unused points (440). You can also downgrade them to 3rd AD (confident/trained) to add another tank.

And finally, if you want to dabble with the ad-hoc platoons that got thrown together to help relieve the Airborne in the Battle of the Bulge (not that we needed the help...they had us surrounded, right where we wanted them!)

Tank Company (4th AD): 1x M4A3 (105mm) Sherman, 1x M4A1 (76mm) Sherman, 1x M4A3E8 Easy Eight, 1x M4A3E2 Jumbo. The Jumbo can help force the opponent to concentrate their fire to bypass it, which lets you spread out a bit elsewhere without getting defeated in detail. The Easy Eight lets you move 6" and fire full rate without needing the Stabilizers, which gives you a great slow-advance option, and the Jumbo (slow tank) keep up. A fun force, but half of it has weak guns.

American 700pts

In phase two, the point level goes up to 700; here's where the US tankers start getting efficient. The previous 4th AD list had 1x M4A3 (105mm) Sherman, 1x M4A1 (76mm) Sherman, 1x M4A3E8 Easy Eight, and 1x M4A3E2 Jumbo... not the most efficient mix, but a couple had to downgrade to free up the points for the others. But, with the extra 200 points in this phase, we can add a tank and upgrade the rest:

Tank Company (4th AD): 2x M4A3E2 Jumbo, 3x M4A3 (76mm) Sherman, confident/veteran. The M4A3s have Detroit's Finest, so move 14" cross-country; that two extra inches can make a real difference. Alternately, you can drop the A3s down to A1s to free up the points to make one of them an Easy Eight (for the Smooth Ride: no penalty for using Stabilizers if you move less than six inches).

Soviet 500pts

Guards Tankovy: 7x T-34/85, confident/trained. Very straightforward list, and strong for the points, but can have problems with German armor, as the Stormtrooper moves can keep the T-34s moving, and Hen and Chicks makes that a rough matchup.

Tankovy: 10x T-34, confident/trained
. More tracks, weaker guns, and the same weakness as above. Works better than just about anything against the Tank Destroyer lists, though, and in dense terrain (fast tank and wide tracks) can do some serious swamping of a section of the battlefield.

Guards Heavy Tank Company: 3x IS-2, confident/trained. A brutal list that comes in at 405 points; front armor 10 means most mediums have to try to flank, which mitigates their Rate of Fire of one. AT 15 firepower 2+ can wreck your day.

Self-Propelled Artillery Company: 1x IS-2, 3x IS-122, confident/trained. A big hitter and his little brothers, you get one more of the big guns as the cost of one point less front and side armor on the 122s.

Assault Gun Company: 8x SU-122, 4x SU-76M, confident/trained. You have less armor than most medium tanks out there, but make up for it with volume of fire and Volley Fire (re-roll misses when stationary at short range). Alternately, you can swap all the 122s for 76Ms for a total of 13 tanks...and that's a lot of wide tracks. Lets you move in terrain to make you more likely to survive to use the Volley Fire.

And on an unrelated note, spell-check offers to replace Tankovy with Anchovy...I think I have a new nickname for them.

German 500pts

Stug Company: 5x StuG G, confident/veteran. Straightforward list, the discount for no turret lets you get the extra tank in compared to the Shermans.

Heavy Tank Company: 2x Tiger, confident/veteran. Good armor, great gun, wide tracks, protected ammo...but only two hulls. This list requires a lot of finesse and some luck with Stormtrooper moves.

Panzerjager Platoon: 7x Hetzer, confident/trained. Basic stats of a StuG; the side armor of two doesn't matter much against Late War guns, though the Overloaded removes a little flexibility. Basically, you are getting the two extra hulls for the downgrade to Trained.
